Alexandrine mutations can affect body color, pigment expression, feather pattern, intensity, and combination outcomes. Correct mutation identification must consider phenotype, parentage, inheritance, and breeding results.

The Alexandrine Parakeet carries more historical and cultural weight than almost any other bird in aviculture. Its association with Alexander the Great is the most well-known part of that story — but it is only the beginning. The species has been present in the courts, literature, trade networks, and bird-keeping traditions of multiple civilizations across more than two thousand years.

Alexander the Great & the Punjab Campaign

In 326 BCE, Alexander's forces crossed the Indus River and advanced into the Punjab — the plains around the Hydaspes River in what is today Pakistan. This was Alexander's easternmost campaign before his troops refused to advance further. It was in this region that Greek naturalists and soldiers first documented the large green parakeets that would eventually carry the commander's name. Specimens were transported westward — through Persia, into Greece — as part of the extraordinary flow of exotic animals, plants, and knowledge that followed the campaign. Within a generation, "the Indian bird" was known in Mediterranean courts.

Greek & Roman Records

Aristotle, writing in the 4th century BCE, described Indian parrots in his Historia Animalium — noting their green plumage, speech ability, and origin in India. Aristotle, Historia Animalium, c. 350 BCE, Book VIII. Pliny the Elder, writing in the 1st century CE, described large green parrots from India in his Naturalis Historia, dedicating a passage to their capacity for speech and the high cost placed on trained individuals. Pliny the Elder, Naturalis Historia, 77–79 CE, Book X. Both accounts describe characteristics consistent with the Alexandrine, and both note the bird's intelligence as the primary reason for its value. In Roman households of sufficient wealth, keeping an Indian parrot was a mark of refinement — the birds were trained to speak and were reportedly worth more than household slaves.

Sanskrit Tradition & Ancient Indian Culture

Long before Alexander arrived in the Punjab, large parakeets were embedded in Indian cultural and literary life. The Sanskrit word "Suka" — a general term for parrots — appears repeatedly in classical Indian literature: in the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, the Panchatantra, and Kalidasa's poetry. In these texts, the parrot is portrayed as an intelligent, educated companion — a bird that speaks, remembers, and carries messages between separated lovers. Mughal Courts & Persian Tradition

Merchants and ambassadors traveling between India, Persia, Central Asia, and the Mediterranean carried exotic animals — including large parakeets — as diplomatic gifts and high-value trade items. The species reached European courts through these routes well before formal aviculture developed. By the 18th and 19th centuries, Alexandrines were documented in private European collections and early zoological institutions, establishing a presence in Western aviculture that has continued without interruption.

The Gulf Region & UAE

The Arabian Gulf has maintained trade connections with the Indian subcontinent for centuries. Large parakeets from India were among the exotic animals that moved through Arabian coastal ports as part of this long exchange. Today, feral Alexandrine populations established in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and other Gulf cities are a living trace of this history — birds descended from escaped or released captives accumulated over generations of trade and keeping. For breeders in the UAE and Gulf region, the Alexandrine is not an imported foreign species. It is a bird with a genuine historical presence in the region, and a species that has adapted successfully to the Gulf climate.

Conservation & Future Outlook

The Alexandrine Parakeet is currently listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List — a status that reflects the species' large global range and overall population resilience. It was previously listed as Near Threatened, and the downgrade to Least Concern does not mean threats have disappeared. It means the species as a whole is not currently at immediate risk of extinction. At a regional and local level, the picture is more nuanced, and the pressures on wild populations are real.

Main Threats

The primary pressures on wild Alexandrine populations include habitat destruction through forest clearance and agricultural expansion; loss of large, old cavity-bearing trees that the species depends on for nesting; historical trapping for the pet trade — now significantly reduced but not eliminated; and agricultural persecution in regions where large flocks cause crop damage. In parts of India and Southeast Asia, populations face increasing fragmentation as forest patches shrink and movement between them becomes difficult. Nest-site competition from introduced or expanding species adds further pressure in some areas.

Within the captive population, different threats apply: hybrid confusion (Alexandrine × Ringneck crosses being sold or bred as pure Alexandrines), weak mutation documentation leading to incorrect identification, undisclosed inbreeding, and the circulation of birds from unknown or undocumented backgrounds. These are not conservation threats in the classical sense, but they damage the integrity of the captive gene pool and reduce the long-term value of the captive population.

CITES Appendix II — What It Means for Breeders

The Alexandrine is listed on CITES Appendix II, meaning international trade in the species requires documentation. This includes import and export permits issued by the relevant CITES Management Authorities. For breeders in the UAE and Gulf region, this means birds must be sourced from legally documented, captive-bred populations — not wild-caught stock. Any bird entering or leaving the country through formal commercial channels requires correct paperwork. Breeders who maintain ring numbers, parentage records, and breeding documentation are in a significantly stronger position when it comes to demonstrating legal origin. This is one practical reason — beyond the breeding benefits — why clean records matter.

Responsible Captive Breeding

A well-run captive population does not damage the wild species — it reduces pressure on it. When breeders produce documented, healthy captive-bred birds at sufficient volume and quality, the demand for wild-caught birds decreases. The conditions for this are: correct species identification and no hybridization; documented mutation genetics; managed genetic diversity with attention to avoiding close inbreeding; proper quarantine and disease control; ring numbers and records that allow traceability; and an overall culture of transparency and standard-setting rather than volume production.

Captive breeding should preserve correct Alexandrine type. Structural quality — proper size, correct head, long tail, strong beak — must be maintained alongside mutation development. A captive population drifting toward smaller, weaker birds with rare colors is not serving the species. It is degrading it.

Pine Cone Enrichment

Clean, untreated pine cones can be used as natural enrichment when properly disinfected and dried. They encourage chewing, foraging, and natural beak activity.

Use only naturally fallen, fully opened pine cones from pesticide-free areas. Avoid roadside cones, treated trees, moldy cones, sticky resin, or anything with a strong chemical or resin smell.
